Window Treatment Cleaning Guide

Knowing the right way to clean your window treatment will help keep them in excellent condition so that they can continue to function as they should and maintain their beauty and style. Window treatments should be either dusted (window shutters) or freshened up (drapes, shades, and curtains). Many people add this to their traditional spring cleaning routine.

You should regularly dust most blinds and shades with a feather duster or vacuum them with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner. If there are stains, they can be cleaned with a sponge and a solution of warm water and mild detergent. Once you’ve cleaned the stain, make sure to dry the area on the window shutter.

There are some window treatment cleaning exceptions, however.

With cellular window shades, you should avoid using spot removers or strong detergents because they may damage the shade. Do not dry clean them, as dry cleaning applies a chemical process to clean and this also may damage your cellular window shades.

For pleated window shades, the shades should be removed from the windows before they’re cleaned. Open the pleated window shades fully and lay them out on a flat surface. You can remove spots or fingerprints with a spray foam upholstery cleaner or a fabric cleaner. Apply the foam to the area that needs to be cleaned and gently rub back and forth with a clean, damp sponge, taking care not to wrinkle or crush the fabric.

As with cellular window shades, no strong detergents should be used nor should pleated window shades be dry cleaned. Don’t clean pleated window shades too frequently because it may alter the fullness and body of the pleated fabric.

Vertical blinds made of vinyl can be cleaned by removing each slat and immersing them in water. You can eliminate static electricity from the slats by coating them with a thin layer of mild detergent. Vertical blind slats that are made of fabric should not be immersed in water nor dry cleaned.

Solar and roller window shades should not be immersed in water. They can be cleaned with a mild detergent and a damp cloth. Make sure the window shades are completely dry before you raise them.

Natural window shades can be cleaned using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Do not use water or any kind of liquid cleaner on natural window shades.

You can clean wood window blinds with painted or stained finishes by using a soft cloth and furniture polish. Water can damage wood, so avoid using it on wood window blinds.

Classic roman window shades should be removed from the window before they are cleaned. Open the window shade fully and lay it on a flat surface. Use a spray foam upholstery or fabric cleaner and a damp spong to spot clean the window shade. Spot removers and strong detergents should not be used, nor should classic roman window shades be dry cleaned.

Drapes and tailored roman window shades are not designed to be washed. Additionally, spot cleaning with water, club soda, soap, or other household cleaners is discouraged. These window treatments should be professionally cleaned by dry cleaners who have experience working with them.
